A teenager studying criminal justice and intent on helping the victimized became a victim herself when a rear tire on the pickup she was driving peeled apart and sent the vehicle into an uncontrollable skid. The pickup rolled over, killing the teen.
The tire was a BF Goodrich Radial Long Trail designed and manufactured by Michelin North America, Inc. It was almost nine years old when it failed through tread/belt separation. The tire was on the vehicle when the young woman’s parents purchased it from a Ford Dealer less than a year before the accident.
In the lawsuit brought on behalf of the young woman’s parents, Rob Ammons claims the Long Trail tire was defectively designed and manufactured by Michelin. The allegations against the tire company include that improper materials and processes were used in building the tire and that it was not designed with the durability and safety features necessary to prevent its components from separating.
Rob Ammons also claims in the lawsuit that the tire’s advanced age contributed greatly to causing the failure that resulted in the young woman’s death. Ammons points out that tires degrade over time, whether or not they are being used.
"Regardless of how it was designed or manufactured, a tire over six years of age should never be placed into service. The dealership knew better. Selling the vehicle with tires that were almost nine years old, even though the tread looked good, was inexcusable and had truly tragic results," explained Ammons.
