Rob Ammons Representing 1st Family to File Notice Against US Government for Mass Sutherland Shooting

Houston area wrongful death attorney Rob Ammons filed the first claim against the United States government Tuesday in the wake of the Nov. 5 mass shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. The claim was filed on behalf of the Holcombe family, which lost 9 members.

The shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley, was convicted of spousal and child abuse and had received a bad-conduct discharge from the U.S. Air Force. The claim states the Air Force failed to take numerous steps that could have prevented Kelley from purchasing the firearm he used, and Ammons said the error in reporting criminal convictions is not uncommon in the Air Force.

“By failing to report, the Air Force is basically shredding gigantic holes in the safety net that is there to protect all of us in society,” Ammons said. “It’s time that this ends and it’s time that this problem is corrected.”

“It involves the worst mass shooting in the history of Texas; it involves a serviceman who had an abysmal record, including convictions that should have been made part of a federal database if they had followed their own policies.They have a policy and they just didn’t do their job. My sincere hope is that no other family will ever have to suffer because the military didn’t do their job trying to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. ”
