Toyota Under Scrutiny for Unresolved Defect in Prius

One of California’s largest auto dealers, Claremont Toyota and Capistrano Toyota, refused to sell used Toyota Priuses because of an unresolved defect that could cause the vehicles to overheat and lose power. Roger Hogan, the dealership owner, filed a lawsuit against Toyota alleging fraud and breach of contract for failing to fix the defect. Hogan believes strongly his lawsuit will prevent loss of lives.

Recall Details

The recall covered all the 2010 to 2014 Toyota Prius vehicles. Toyota officially recognized a problem in the hybrid system back in Feb. 12, 2014, when it filed a voluntary recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Toyota acknowledged that the defect could cause overheating in a device called an inverter, which controls high power transfers between the battery and the vehicle’s two electric motors.

The Fix

Toyota denied the allegations listed in Hogan’s lawsuit and stands by the new software it placed in these Priuses. Still, Toyota’s fix involved unspecified changes to the vehicle’s inverter software. Affected owners should visit the Toyota Recall page and enter their 17-digit VIN (vehicle identification number) to check current information, as well as the NHTSA recall page for the latest updates.
