General Motors to Recall 3.5 Million Trucks, SUVs For Faulty Brakes

Under pressure from the federal government, General Motors will recall nearly 3.46 million United States pick-up trucks and SUVs, citing an issue that could make braking more difficult.

The GM recall encompasses nearly 4 million vehicles – including 3.46 million in the United States – including some of Chevrolet and GMC’s most popular models.

The specific makes and models affected by this recall include:

  • 2014 – 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up trucks
  • 2014 – 2018 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 pick-up trucks
  • 2015 – 2017 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2015 – 2018 GMC Yukon
  • 2015 – 2017 Chevrolet Suburban

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) first began their investigation last November, citing reports of nine related crashes which included two injuries. In NHTSA’s 10-month investigation, the agency has discovered additional field reports that include 113 accidents and 13 injuries related to the brake defect.

The recall was triggered due to an engine-mounted mechanical vacuum pump. In a statement from GM, “these vehicles may have a condition in which the vacuum pump output may decrease over time, decreasing the amount of vacuum/power brake assist.” As the pumps in the power-assist brakes put out less vacuum power than is needed, “customers may experience increased brake pedal effort, hard brake pedal and/or potentially increased stopping distance.”

NHTSA stated the problem is much more likely to occur at low speeds, such as in a parking lot or when approaching crosswalks, both areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. Of the 111 complaints made to NHTSA, many of them mentioned issues with their braking habits when maneuvering into a parking spot or yielding to a pedestrian.

Shockingly, GM only just announced the recall this past Wednesday but recalled 310,000 vehicles in Canada for the same issue back in June. The question becomes why General Motors waited three months to issue this recall in the United States.
