Multiple Deadly Oil Field and Plant Explosions Rock Texas in January

Although heavy-duty industrial occupations like oil extraction and plastics manufacturing come with a certain degree of risk, no one should have to worry about losing their life or becoming injured in an explosion. In January, explosions at 4 different industrial worksites caused dozens of Texas workers and residents to suffer serious injuries.

Here’s a quick overview of the January oil field and plant explosions that rocked Texas:

  • Jones County oil field explosion on January 11th: At a Jones County oil field, a worker named Jorge Martinez was killed while power washing a heater on an oil tank battery that was scheduled to undergo important repairs.
  • Lake Charles Chemicals Project explosion on January 13th: Sasol’s hotly-contested U.S. plant called the Lake Charles Chemical Project recently exploded due to ongoing technical challenges at the plant.
  • Watson Grinding and Manufacturing explosion on January 24th: The largest explosion took place at plastics manufacturing plant Watson Grinding in northwest Houston, where 2 workers were killed, at least 18 people were injured, and 200 homes were damaged. This explosion also released dangerous amounts of toxic polypropylene gas into the air above Houston.
  • Burleson County oil well blowout on January 29th: When an oil well exploded into flames in Burleson County, three contractors were critically injured and one was killed in the blast.
