3 Common Hazards on a Construction Site

While every work environment contains hazards, there is no doubt that some work environments are significantly more dangerous than others. Construction sites, in particular, pose some of the greatest risks to workers and those walking near the area.

Below, our Houston personal injury attorneys discuss three hazards that are common on construction sites, and what you can do if you or someone you love has been injured in a construction accident.

#1. Heavy Machinery

Nearly every construction site uses heavy machinery to move materials from one side of the job site to another. When heavy machinery is not maintained properly, or when those operating heavy machinery are not trained correctly, tragic accidents can occur.

Accidents involving heavy machinery such as cranes, forklifts, and more, may cause the following catastrophic or fatal injuries:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Injuries requiring amputation
  • Crushing or degloving injuries
  • Wrongful death

#2. The Use of Large Building Materials

Constructions sites make use of large, heavy materials in order to construct buildings and other structures. When such heavy materials are moved around the job site frequently, the chances of a serious accident increase, simply due to the nature of the task.

Concrete, timber, stone, and other heavy materials can fall from a piece of equipment onto the job site, injuring construction workers in the process, or they can even fall off the job site altogether, endangering passersby.

#3. The Height at Which Work is Performed

Falling from a great height is a significant risk on any construction site. While many construction workers have harnesses and ropes securing them to an object on the job site in order to prevent falls, not every construction company requires or encourages their workers to make use of such safety equipment. And, given the often unstable nature of construction sites, falls continue to pose significant risks for workers.
