Lloyd Shobe and Richard Turner killed in crash on I-80

LANCASTER COUNTY, Neb. — Lloyd Shobe, 63-year-old Arizona man, and Richard Turner, a 48-year-old man from Iowa, were tragically killed in a crash Oct. 19 on Interstate 80 near Goehner.

Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol believe an eastbound semi tractor-trailer driven by Shobe crossed the median of I-80 at about 11:15 a.m. and hit a semi tractor-trailer driven by Turner, according to a local news report.

Both Shobe and Turner were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Shobe was a resident of Mesa, Arizona, and Turner resided in Pella, Iowa.

The crash investigation is ongoing and no additional information has been released.

COMMENTARY ON TRUCK ACCIDENTS

I am disheartened to learn of the awful crash that has taken the lives of Lloyd Shobe and Richard Turner well in advance of their anticipated life expectancy. I have firsthand experience with the suffering, grief, and heartache thier loved ones are surely experiencing as they try to hold their world together while navigating the legal maelstrom they have suddenly been thrust into.

Accidents of this type are not as common as you might expect, considering the millions and millions of miles driven by tractor-trailers on our nation’s highways. Approximately only 10% of all vehicle fatalities involve semi-trucks annually. However, these types of accidents are on the rise. From 2009 to 2019, fatal accidents involving trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds increased by about 45% according to a National Safety Council study. Even one death is one too many.

The cause of this terrible crash is not discernable from the details in the news report. A thorough investigation is needed to determine whether fatigue, mechanical failure, distracted driving or some other factor may weigh in.

My sincere condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased.
