SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Cali. – A San Miguel man was killed Sept. 22 in a rollover crash north of Paso Robles.
The 38-year-old was northbound in a Nissan Frontier on Highway 101 at about 12:40 p.m. when his vehicle appeared to have experienced tire failure, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.
The man applied his brakes and steered left, causing his vehicle to cross over the median and into the southbound lanes where it overturned and came to rest on its roof.
CHP said the driver was “partially pinned” under the truck during the accident. He was extracted and airlifted to Sierra Vista Regional Medical center in San Luis Obispo, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
CHP has yet to identify the victim. Two other passengers were in his truck at the time of the accident, including 37-year-old Maricela Vasquez and 22-year-old Raul Gonzalez. Both are also residents of San Miguel, according to officials.
Vasquez was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with a broken arm and possible broken shoulder and Gonzalez was treated and released at the scene of the crash, according to a local news report.
The accident remains under investigation. Preliminary findings did not suggest drugs, alcohol or distraction contributed to the crash, according to CHP’s news release.
COMMENTARY ON TIRE DEFECT ACCIDENTS
Another rollover caused by tire failure claims one human life and injures two others. Accidents such as these are far too common on America’s roadways, causing significant damage and disruption.
Tire failures may occur for various reasons, but the most common and most dangerous failures are tread-belt separations in which the tire tread and top steel belt tear away from the tire. Tread separations present the most hazardous situations for drivers because vehicles become uncontrollable even for experienced or professional drivers.
Tire defect may be a factor is this tragic crash; however, a thorough investigation will be required to make that determination. It is vital for all remaining pieces of the tire are collected to ensure the exact cause of this accident can be determined. My heart goes out to the families of those affected by this terrible accident.
