TRINITY, Ala.—Texas resident Don Burton tragically lost his life in an industrial accident Sept. 20 at an Alabama steel mill, the Nucor Steel facility in Trinity.
Officers with the Decatur Police Department said they responded to the Nucor Steel facility in Trinity at about 8 a.m. to find that Burton had been hit by a forklift at the company’s hot mill.
A battalion chief with Decatur Fire and Rescue told the Decatur Daily that transport was requested but both available air services declined to transport due to weather. Burton was transported by a ground ambulance to Huntsville hospital where he later died.
Jim Brown, Nucor controller, said Burton was not a Nucor teammate but was working on Nucor property as an employee for contractor Delta Fabrication & Machine of Daingerfield, Texas.
“It’s very misfortunate for him and his family,” Delta Field Superintendent Cole McCord said in a statement. “It’s under investigation. That is all we can say.”
COMMENTARY WORK PLACE ACCIDENTS
I am disheartened to hear that another life has been lost in a tragic work-related accident. This is the third man who has died on the job in Northern Alabama in the last six weeks. Mishaps such as this are far too common, oftentimes due to misconduct or negligence on the part of the owner of the property on which the accident occurs, or on the part of the employer who has either failed to properly train the employee or who has failed to ensure proper safety measures are followed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5,333 fatal work injuries were recorded in the United States in 2019. That equates to one worker’s death every 99 minutes on the job. The number of work-related fatalities creeps up every year despite best efforts to make our places of employment safer. I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Burton during this difficult time.
