Jeremy Caine Green dies in Charlotte motorcycle crash

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C.— A 41-year-old motorcyclist named Jeremy Caine Green was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer Sept. 15 in northwest Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Green was driving on Hovis Road at about 11 p.m. when the accident occurred. Green’s motorcycle hit the front left tire of the Freightliner tractor towing a trailer, as its driver, 33-year-old Scotty Culbertson, attempted to turn left onto the roadway off Northern Drive, according to a local news report.

Upon arrival, first responders found Green in the road where he tragically lost his life.

Police suspect impairment and speed contributed to the crash, although they have not specified on whose part.

Officials have not released any additional information about the accident, including whether the driver of the tractor-trailer suffered any injuries.

COMMENTARY ON FATAL CAR ACCIDENTS

More than 5,000 people died in 2019 in crashes involving large trucks, including 71% who were occupants of the other vehicle involved in the accident. A tractor-trailer weighs about 80,000 pounds when fully loaded. That is 20 to 30 times more than a passenger vehicle. As you might suspect, a motorcyclist does not stand much of a chance when colliding with one of these big rigs.

Statistically, motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to suffer a fatal accident than passenger car occupants per vehicle miles traveled. Excessive speed, impairment, road conditions, inclement weather, and poor visibility on the part of other drivers significantly contribute to the number of motorcycle fatalities each year. In this case, it appears the driver of the semi failed to keep a proper lookout and pulled in front of Green, causing this tragedy.

I have represented many individuals involved in motorcycle accidents like this one here in Charlotte, and I have seen the immense heartache caused by these crashes up close. My sincere condolences go out to Jeremy’s loved ones during this difficult time.
