FLOYD COUNTY, Texas—A crash at the intersection of U.S. Route 70 and Farm-to-Market Road 378 left one dead and another injured Feb. 8.
The deceased driver was identified as Christian Bursiaga, a 24-year-old man who lived in Lockney, Texas.
Bursiaga was driving a pickup truck south on FM 378 when the vehicle collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer at the intersection of US 70, according to state troopers. The tractor-trailer overturned and came to rest in the median.
Bursiaga was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the semi-truck, identified as German Cecena Burgueno, a 64-year-old Haskell man, was taken to W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries that did not appear life-threatening.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Commentary on the Fatal Collision that Killed Christian Bursiaga
I am saddened to learn that a fatal accident claimed a young man’s life in my home state. Undoubtedly the Bursiaga family is searching for answers in the wake of their tragic loss. An investigation into the acts of the trucker must be undertaken to ensure this suffering family receives the answers they deserve.
For one, we need to know if this driver was adequately prepared to be driving at the time of the accident. Was Mr. Burgueno’s judgment impaired by drugs or alcohol? Had Mr. Burgueno received proper rest before operating his vehicle? Was Mr. Burgueno focused on the road, or was he distracted by personal matters? If Mr. Burgueno was impaired, fatigued, or distracted while operating his semi-truck, serious questions are raised concerning his conduct at the time of the accident.
I am not trying to blame Mr. Burgueno if blame is not due. However, when a young man’s life is taken, and the only survivor is the involved party, the accident warrants serious attention. A grieving family deserves to know the truth surrounding their loved one’s death.
