HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A driver died Feb. 20 in a fiery crash involving an 18-wheeler on the bridge over the Houston Ship Channel.
Houston police said the accident happened at about 3 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 610.
A white SUV was reportedly traveling at an excessive speed when the driver attempted to switch lanes and crashed into the back of a southbound 18-wheeler. The force of impact led the SUV to bounce off of a barrier before coming to rest and briefly catching fire.
The driver of the SUV was partially ejected during the crash. Emergency response personnel extracted the victim from the vehicle and performed life-saving measures, but the driver ultimately died at the scene.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was reportedly not injured and cooperating with law enforcement’s ongoing investigation into the crash.
Authorities have not released the name of either driver involved.
