Julie Casey dead, 2 injured in accident on SH 136 near Asarco Plant in Texas

POTTER COUNTY, Texas — Julie Casey, a 72-year-old Borger, Texas, resident, tragically died Feb. 10 in a three-vehicle accident on State Highway 136 that seriously injured two others.

State troopers said the driver of a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe failed to drive in a single lane of travel and struck the front left of a northbound GMC vehicle after veering into the northbound lane a few minutes before 4 p.m.

The GMC slid off the roadway and spun before resting in the west ditch of State Highway 136 facing west. The Tahoe reportedly veered off the road, spun, and struck the GMC a second time in the front right panel with its back end before coming to a rest.

A passenger in the front seat of the GMC, Casey, was sadly pronounced dead at the accident scene. Emergency response personnel transported the Tahoe driver and the GMC driver to hospitals in critical condition. Authorities have not released the name of either driver.

State troopers are actively investigating the crash. No additional information was immediately available.

Commentary on the fatal Accident in Potter County, Texas

The reports provided suggest multiple families will be impacted by this accident. Ms. Casey lost her life, and two unnamed victims sustained serious injuries. Those affected will be searching for answers and deserve to know all information available.

Most importantly, we need to understand the Tahoe driver’s acts leading up to the initial impact. Once initial impact was made, control was lost, and all subsequent actions were likely outside the driver’s control. However, the initial impact is entirely unacceptable. If this driver was impaired or fatigued, serious consequences should be explored.

Additionally, we need to understand if the vehicles involved experienced any mechanical issues during the accident process. Often, an older vehicle’s safety feature fails to perform as intended and causes a more severe injury than would have otherwise been sustained. When this occurs, it is essential to look at the acts of the manufacturer in manufacturing the vehicle and warning potential customers of the known defects.
