LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. — A rollover accident on Interstate 94 killed a Westville man and injured two others on Jan. 6.

The multi-vehicle accident started when a red 2005 Dodge Ram rolled into the far-right lane of eastbound I-94 at about 5:30 a.m., according to Indiana State Police.

The driver exited the truck near mile marker 37 and stood next to his vehicle. A white Chevrolet cargo van collided with his vehicle a short time later and spun into the path of a semi-trailer where it was struck on its passenger side.

An approaching black 2007 GMC truck saw the collisions occurring and tried to avoid them, but spun out of control in the process. His vehicle hit the center median wall of the interstate before striking the semi’s trailer.

One passenger in the van was pronounced dead at the accident scene, a second was flown to a hospital in Chicago with serious injuries, and a third was transported to a Michigan City hospital with injuries. The drivers of the GMC and Dodge Ram did not suffer injuries.

None of the persons involved in the accident have been named by authorities, including the man who lost his life.

The crash remains under investigation by state police, who have not released any additional information about contributing factors.

Commentary on the fatal rollover accident in Laporte County, Indiana

Fatal Multi-vehicle Accident, Houston LawyerCrashes like this present complex issues that will take time and experience to sort through. When a man’s life is taken, justice requires an independent investigation to help provide answers to the grieving family.

On first brush, many may look at this case and conclude the original accident is to blame for all subsequent accidents. However, it is essential to consider all the possible scenarios before drawing any ultimate conclusions. For instance, what caused the Dodge Ram to roll in the first place. My firm specializes in product defect law, and I can attest to the number of accidents caused by mechanical failure outside the driver’s control. If that were the case, blame could not rest entirely on the driver.

Conversely, what is the story behind the driver of the semi-truck? It’s alarming that neither driver could safely navigate the scene of the accident. Were drivers distracted? Or perhaps, visibility impaired?

I will refrain from drawing any conclusions until after a detailed investigation has been conducted. However, it is important to recognize accidents of this nature are far from simple.

I extend my condolences to the family of the deceased and hope for solace during this time of grief.
