HARRIS COUNTY, Texas—A police chase in Northeast Houston ended in a terrible series of crashes Jan. 12 that killed a woman and injured five others.

While chasing an armed robbery suspect, a deputy drove through an intersection and smashed into another vehicle, killing the female driver and injuring two children aboard, according to local authorities. The kids, ages 5 and 2, were transported to local hospitals. The 5-year-old is reportedly in critical condition.

Multiple crashes involving five other cars followed the first. Three more people were transported to hospitals with injuries due to the collisions. None of the victims’ names have been released.

The deputy’s vehicle caught fire, but first responders were able to rescue him. Police said the deputy had his lights and sirens on as he traveled through the intersection. An investigation is ongoing.

Police have not yet located the armed suspect involved in the police chase.

Thoughts and Commentary on the North Houston Police Chase

North Houston Personal Injury AccidentI am deeply saddened to learn a police chase ended in such a tragic accident. Police officers are charged with balancing the community’s safety with the duty to keep our streets free from criminal behavior. This duty requires split-second decision-making and is often very difficult. The law is aware of this conundrum and accounts for the officer’s duty when determining liability.

With the details provided, it is difficult to gauge whether the officer was acting within reason at the time of the accident. The parties involved will need to conduct further investigation before a fair and proper outcome can be struck. However, it is important to realize that simply being a police officer does not shield reckless behavior.

I extend my condolences to the families involved and hope the injured will make a full and speedy recovery.
