GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas—Two people tragically died March 14 after a truck driver reportedly failed to control speed and struck several vehicles on southbound Highway 287 between State Highway 360 and Prairie.
Local officials said the driver of the semi-truck hit three vehicles in the stretch of roadway, which was congested because of construction work.
Two of the drivers whose vehicles were struck died as a result of their injuries. No occupants in the third vehicle suffered injuries.
Authorities have yet to release the names of any persons involved in the crash, including the victims.
An investigation into the accident is underway. No additional information has been released.
Thoughts on the fatal semi accident in Grand Prairie, Texas
This accident is appalling and the outcome cannot be tolerated. Truck drivers owe their fellow motorists a duty of care in the operation of their motor vehicles at all times. Failure to comply with this duty requires the full weight of the civil law, and when appropriate, the criminal law.
It is clear that the driver of the semi-truck was the direct cause of these deaths. However, what we do not know, and what will require further investigation, is the mental state of the driver at the time of the accident and the role of the employer. Was the driver drunk or high? Was the driver distracted by a phone or other device? Was the driver fatigued? On the other hand, did the employer properly train the driver? Were policies instituted to prevent drivers from driving distracted? Was the truck properly maintained and repaired to ensure safe travel?
Answers to these questions, and others like it, will provide insight into the culpability of the parties involved. The families affected are entitled to know the truth and receive the justice they deserve. I encourage those impacted by this accident, and others like it, to reach out to trained professionals for assistance. Matters involving corporate insurance providers are notoriously messy and require perseverance and training.
I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims and pray that you all may find the peace you need to endure the difficult road of grief that lies ahead.
