Four people were killed after crashing into a semi-truck on U.S. Hwy 59 in Hillje

HILLJE, Texas—Four people were fatally injured after their pickup truck smashed into the side of a Peterbilt semi-truck at approximately 9:11 p.m. on October 23, 2022, near Hillje, Texas.

Police reports suggest that a 2001 Peterbilt semi-truck was traveling south on U.S. Highway 59 when the truck driver attempted to cross the northbound lane to turn onto County Road 309. At the same time, a 2021 Ford F-150 traveling northbound struck the trailer.

The pickup driver, a 77-year-old male from Corpus Christi, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with two female passengers, 58 and 79. Another female passenger, 75, was taken to El Campo Memorial Hospital by ambulance but was later pronounced dead. The semi-truck driver’s condition remains unknown.

This accident is still under investigation. No additional information has been released to the public.

Victims injured in collisions involving semi-trucks may seek compensation from all responsible parties.

Semi-truck drivers must be aware of their surroundings, even when traveling on a secondary highway or county road. Commercial trucking companies must also ensure their drivers are adequately trained to handle emergencies and take evasive action to avoid collisions. When drivers are distracted or lack appropriate training, the results can be catastrophic to other motorists. From the facts provided, it seems the driver of this big rig was distracted or failed to see the oncoming truck, resulting in the death of four.

Indeed, those injured in a wreck with a semi-truck may wonder what could have been done to prevent the crash. Attorneys are skilled at overseeing independent investigations to determine causation in collisions with large trucks. Such investigations sometimes reveal key details not readily apparent during the initial examination of the crash site. For example, our attorneys have handled cases with similar fact patterns, only to discover that the semi-truck was stopped on the roadway when another vehicle crashed into the big rig.

While we are unsure of all the pertinent facts at this time, there can be no question that further investigation into this crash would be prudent.
