One Killed In Truck Accident On Stevenson Expressway in Lemont

LEMONT, Illinois—On November 1, 2022, one person was killed in a crash involving a semi-truck on Lemont Road on the inbound Stevenson Expressway around 12:19 p.m.

News reports suggest that an SUV became wedged beneath the back of a semi truck's trailer, resulting in one person being pronounced dead at the crash site. No other injuries were reported. The accident necessitated the closure of two right lanes on Lemont Road and Cass Avenue for nearly five hours.

Investigators are continuing to evaluate the scene. No further information is publicly available.

A victim's family can consult an attorney to obtain compensation from responsible parties.

Although the facts are sparse, news stories reporting on this accident suggest the semi-truck cut the SUV off in traffic, causing the SUV to become lodged underneath the back bumper of the semi's trailer. Should that be the case, the victim's family may have the means to obtain compensation from either the semi-truck driver, a commercial trucking company, or both.

Semi-truck drivers must ensure they are driving safely at all times since the consequences of colliding with a semi-truck can be catastrophic. Semi-truck drivers must also be aware of their surroundings on the road and leave enough room between their vehicles and smaller cars to prevent collisions.

Similarly, commercial trucking companies that own semi-trucks and employ truck drivers must ensure that their drivers are vetted thoroughly and are equipped to drive safely. Thus, all commercial trucking companies must provide their drivers with training and resources, including proper overtaking of smaller vehicles and adequate stopping distances. If a trucking company fails to educate its drivers and any driver negligently causes a collision, the trucking company may share in the responsibility for that crash. Large trucking companies often carry insurance policies specifically designated to assist in compensating crash victims.

Should further investigation reveal that the truck driver negligently cut off the smaller SUV, causing the SUV to crash into the semi's trailer, then the victim's family will likely be entitled to receive compensation from both the truck driver and the trucking company.
