Single-vehicle rollover crash kills one woman and injures a man on I-65 in Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Indiana—One woman died, and another male passenger was injured in a rollover accident on October 13, 2022, in Greenwood, Indiana. The crash occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on I-65 north at the 100.5 mile marker by the exit ramp to County Line Road.

According to initial reports, a female pickup driver veered off-road for unknown reasons and then came back on the road before sliding sideways and rolling multiple times near the exit ramp. The driver was pinned under the pickup truck when emergency personnel arrived.

The woman died at the scene, and a male passenger was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The crash necessitated the closure of the northbound ramp to County Line Road, as well as the closure of I-65 northbound for nearly four hours.

Authorities are actively investigating this tragic crash. Further details have not been made available to the public.

An investigation will help to determine whether a seat belt failed to restrain the woman in the crash

Although we do not yet know all the details of this crash, we know that the woman who passed away was trapped beneath the vehicle when first responders arrived. Rollover accidents can cause a lot of damage to the car and severely injure passengers, but people usually end up trapped inside their vehicle after a rollover. Why, then, was the deceased discovered outside the vehicle while her passenger remained inside the car and escaped the crash with minor injuries? Perhaps a seatbelt malfunction increased the devastating impact of the crash.

Further investigation into the cause of the crash will be needed to determine whether a manufacturer or design defect, such as a seat belt failure, may have contributed to the woman’s fatal injuries. Vehicle manufacturers must ensure the safety features installed within their vehicles, such as seat belts, can withstand the force of a rollover without malfunctioning. Seat belts often fail by not latching correctly, separating from their retraction mechanisms, or sheering off after encountering force. If investigators determine that a manufacturer’s prioritization of safety may have prevented the woman’s death, the woman’s family may successfully bring a claim against the vehicle manufacturer.
