Three family members were injured, and one was killed in a deadly collision with a semi-truck on I-10 near Tonopah, Arizona

TONOPAH, Arizona—Three of four passengers in a van were injured, and another died after their vehicle was rear-ended by a semi-truck around 3:00 a.m. on October 6, 2022, on I-10 near Tonopah, Arizona.

Initial reports suggest that a van and a semi-truck were both traveling eastbound on I-10 when the 18-wheeler experienced a sudden tire failure, lost control, and rolled onto the van occupied by four people.

Four people, reportedly a family traveling from Texas, were in the van at the time of the accident. Sadly, one individual was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The other three passengers were transported to a local hospital. The two individuals in the semi-truck sustained minor injuries.

This wreck caused significant backups of the east and westbound lanes of I-10, with lane closures lasting more than four hours.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing. No further information about the crash has been released.

Tire failures on trucks are killing people nationwide, and something must be done.

This is an absolutely horrific crash that cannot go unnoticed. Our firm is one of the leading firms in tire-related crashes in the nation, and we are seeing more tire blowouts on big rigs leading to serious, fatal crashes than we have seen over the past thirty years. Many of these tire blowouts are caused by defective tires, while others are caused by poor maintenance and repair by the trucking company or service repair shops. Regardless of the reason, something must be done to improve the quality of tires on our roadways and protect innocent victims and their families from life-shattering consequences.

Tire manufacturers must produce tires free from defects, and when they fail to do this, they are responsible for all harm caused by their wrongdoing. In this case, innocent lives were lost, and the family left behind will be left picking up the pieces for the rest of their lives. Identifying the cause of the tire failure and holding the appropriate wrongdoer responsible is necessary to prevent other families from suffering the same fate. The law is one of the most effective ways to warn consumers of dangerous products and force manufacturers to remove other products suffering from the same problem. While we will need to inspect this tire to determine if it was defective, the family and the community at large deserve to know.

It is also possible that this accident was caused by a trucking company that failed to inspect and maintain its tires. This, unfortunately, happens far more often than people realize, and such a business should not be permitted to risk other people's lives in the pursuit of their own profits. We cannot tell what happened here from the facts provided, and the crash will need to be investigated by trained lawyers with training in tire-related accidents. However, it is clear this crash never should have happened and the family involved is entitled to answers and justice under our legal system.

Until then, I offer my deepest condolences to all impacted by this terrible wreck and pray they might find peace during this difficult time.
