What is an ARC Inflator, and Why Does It Rupture?

An airbag inflator is a component in an airbag system that generates gas to rapidly inflate the airbag in the event of a collision or other impact. The gas generated by the inflator fills the airbag so the cushion can protect the occupants of a vehicle from the force of an impact. ARC inflators use a variety of gas-generating materials, including ammonium nitrate, to produce the gas needed to inflate the airbag. These materials are housed in a metal canister that, during deployment, may explode and send metal fragments of shrapnel throughout the vehicle. Airbags are essential to a vehicle’s safety system, and defective airbags fail to provide occupant protection and increase the risk of serious injury or death in routine accidents.

The NHTSA has investigated and continues to investigate potentially dangerous ARC inflators, and several recalls have been issued by manufacturers. For instance, In March 2022, GM recalled the front airbags in 2011-2012 GMC Sierra 1500s and Yukons over defective ARC inflators that may rupture during deployment. However, limited recalls issued by specific manufacturers do not address the larger issue, and millions of vehicles remain on public roadways with potentially dangerous ARC inflators.

Recovering Compensation for Injuries Caused by Defective Airbag Inflators

Under the law of strict product liability, a manufacturer is liable for the harm caused by a product that is proven defective. Motorists injured by a defective airbag have a right to bring a claim against the product manufacturer and recover compensation for their injuries and harm.

At The Ammons Law Firm, we represent clients across the nation that have been seriously injured by defective airbags in all types of accidents. A manufacturer may be responsible for the injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident when the injuries are caused by a defective airbag. For instance, we have represented clients involved in minor traffic collisions that should have walked away without injury, but because the airbag ruptured during deployment, our clients suffered serious face and upper body injuries when metal shrapnel exploded through their vehicle. It is important to recognize that if you were injured by a defective airbag, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries, even when the cause of the crash is unclear.

If you or a family member suffered injuries in a car accident where an ARC airbag, or any airbag, did not deploy as it should have, it is important to talk with our trained auto defect attorneys to better understand your rights.
