McLean County, Illinois – 25-year-old Cory Geist was killed in a two-vehicle truck accident on Interstate 55 in McLean County, Illinois.
According to authorities, Geist was traveling southbound on I-55 in a 2023 GMC Box Truck when a semi-truck driven by 39-year-old Issa Mohomed regained the lane of traffic after stopping on the side of the road and cut off Mr. Geist. Geist, unable to avoid the merging semi-truck, crashed into the back of the trailer, resulting in a fatal collision.
Authorities reported Geist, of Tucson, Arizona, died at the scene of the crash. The occupants of the semi-truck were reportedly uninjured.
Mohomed, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was charged with violating minimum speed regulations, improper lane usage, and failure to yield to merging traffic.
No further information was immediately available.
The family deserves answers and justice for the unexpected passing of their loved one
This is a heartbreaking crash that has cost a young man his life and a grieving family unimaginable pain. While further investigations will need to take place before any firm conclusions can be drawn, the fact that the semi-truck driver was cited suggests that the negligence leading to the accident was rather blatant and the crash avoidable had the trucker exercised greater care in the operation of his vehicle.
The law is straightforward when another’s negligence results in the loss of life: the wrongdoer is accountable for the resulting harm. However, before wrongdoing can be fully understood, it will be important to determine the actions of all involved. While the driver’s actions cannot be ignored, it will be important to consider the actions of his employer as well. I have found that many accidents caused by blatant disregard for others’ safety stem from a corporate culture that disregards others’ safety. For instance, if a company fails to provide training, reprimand drivers for poor driving and unsafe driving practices, or hires drivers with a history of poor driving to save a few dollars each month, its drivers perpetuate this lax attitude towards safety onto the roadways, resulting in devastating accidents and injuries.
Uncovering the employer’s actions is a critical step to hold all wrongdoers accountable and enact change throughout our communities. Identifying corporate wrongdoing allows for safer policies and procedures, which increase the safety of all drivers, reducing the number of senseless deaths on our roadways.
I extend my deepest condolences to the surviving family of Mr. Geist. This is a terrible loss that can never fully heal. I pray that all affected may find the strength to persevere through the difficult days and months ahead.
