JACKSON COUNTY, Florida – Two people were killed after a tire blowout on I-10 caused the driver of an RV to lose control of the vehicle and crash.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, two unidentified motorists were traveling eastbound on I-10 approaching the Chipola River Bridge when a sudden tire failure caused the RV to crash into the guardrail and travel down an embankment where it rolled multiple times before landing, partially submerged, in the Chipola River.
Authorities reported that the 73-year-old driver of the vehicle and 68-year-old passenger died in the accident, along with their pet dog.
The cause of the blowout was not immediately apparent. The accident remains under investigation.
The family of the innocent motorists deserves answers
As authorities conduct their investigation into the accident, photos of the crash scene depict the front-left, driver-side tire severely damaged as though it suffered a catastrophic tread separation. To confirm this, the tire will need to be preserved by the family and investigated by trained tire defect attorneys who can determine the exact cause of failure.
Sudden tread separation is one of the most dangerous emergencies a motorist can face, especially on a full-size RV. A tread separation is different from other blowouts because it reduces traction, resulting in a complete loss of control. We have seen an alarming number of tread separation accidents occurring on RV and semi-trucks across the nation resulting in serious, often fatal, injuries.
Innocent motorists and their families affected by a tread-separation accident have the right to bring a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer for the harm caused by the defective tire. Not only does this provide the family answers, but it also identifies widespread defects and can lead to nationwide recalls. Over the last thirty years, our work on behalf of injured clients has resulted in over 100 million defective products being recalled and removed from our roadways. Holding manufacturers accountable for their mistakes truly does save lives.
It is too early to determine if this tire was defective. However, this was a catastrophic accident that caused the death of two innocent motorists. Such harm cannot go unanswered, and the surviving family deserves answers as to why this tire failed and who is responsible for its blowout. If the tire proves defective, the manufacturer must be held responsible for its mistakes, and other similarly situated tires must be removed from our roadways.
I extend my deepest condolences to all those affected by this crash and pray that the surviving family may be strengthened during this difficult time of loss and grief.
