Scot Blake Hospitalized in Critical Condition After Tire Blowout Accident on US 68 in Trigg County, Kentucky

Trigg County, KY – A trucker sustained serious injuries after his tanker truck suffered a tire blowout. The incident happened Tuesday afternoon on US 68 in Land Between the Lakes.

Reports state the tire blowout caused the eastbound truck to veer off the road, cross the median, and overturn multiple times before coming to a rest in the westbound lanes.

Truck driver Scot Blake sustained critical injuries in the crash, and emergency personnel airlifted him to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, where he remains hospitalized.

Commercial truck tires should not blowout

Some people may look at this crash and assume that it was just bad luck, that the tire was not properly maintained, or that no one is at fault in a single-vehicle tire failure crash.  This is a mistake.

People need to realize that if a manufacturer does not make a semi-truck tire with the utmost care, the tire will be defective and blow out before its useful life is reached.

When a tire blows because of a defect, it’s not bad luck and has nothing to do with maintenance. It is the direct result of a manufacturer who put profits over safety at the expense of the motoring public.

Tire manufacturers know this and must do everything within their power to ensure the tires they make and sell are safe. Unfortunately, this does not always happen, and as a result, innocent men and women are injured and killed on our roadways.

For instance, we are handling a case just like this where our client was driving a tractor-trailer through Arizona when his front left steer axle tire failed, causing his truck to pull hard into the left median. Unable to control the force of the sudden tire failure, the truck rolled over, and our client suffered serious, debilitating injuries that will prevent him from ever holding a job again.

The tire manufacturer wants to blame our client for not being able to control the truck after the blowout and blame his employer for not maintaining the tire properly. However, when we inspected the tire, it was clear the tire suffered a tread separation due to poor bonding during the manufacturing process.

The top side of the tire with its tread completely separated from the body of the tire. This is known as a tire detread, and a common result of a manufacturing defect.

This type of tire failure directly falls on the shoulders of the manufacturer for producing a tire that was unsafe to use on our roadways.

This is a big problem, and manufacturers cannot continue to escape liability when innocent truckers’ lives are changed forever because of tires that never should have been on the road in the first place.

We need to do more to prevent these types of accidents from happening.
