Charles Nelson Killed in an Accident with a Semi-truck on Interstate 80 in Berkeley, California

Berkeley, CA – A man died Thursday morning around 3:40 am after a semi-truck struck him. The incident happened on Interstate 80 in Berkeley.

Preliminary reports indicate that 82-year-old Charles Nelson may have been a driver who had pulled over and was possibly attempting to flag down help when a semi-truck struck him.

The driver of a semi-truck contacted authorities, believing he had hit someone.

No additional details have been released.

Thoughts on pedestrian accidents with semi-trucks

Motorists are responsible for driving safely and maintaining appropriate speeds on the roadway. Truck drivers, in particular, must keep enough distance to react to unexpected situations. When basic safety rules are ignored, and a fatality occurs, the responsible party should be held accountable.

This accident happened very early in the morning. Driving during these hours means less visibility, placing an even greater responsibility on truck drivers to reduce speed and stay focused. Did the driver follow these safety protocols in this case? When truck operators neglect safety and cause a death, they should be held accountable.

While some details are still missing, we know that a man lost his life in an otherwise preventable accident. When this happens, the deceased’s family deserves answers.

If a thorough investigation finds that negligence or wrongdoing contributed to this man’s death, his family deserves compensation. Although no amount of money can bring back a loved one, it serves as the law’s way of recognizing the wrong done and acknowledging the profound suffering endured by families through no fault of their own.
