Cesar Hernandez Donu Dies in an Accident at Tampa International Airport in Florida

Tampa, Fla. –  A construction worker lost his life Wednesday morning during a renovation project at Tampa International Airport. The incident involved an equipment operator working on the Airside A Shuttle Guideway Refurbishment Project.

According to reports, construction equipment with the operator inside fell off the shuttle track.

The operator died from the injuries they sustained.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, which manages TPA, has suspended all work on the project pending a comprehensive safety review. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Workplace accidents are preventable and should not happen

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the construction industry saw more worker fatalities in 2022 than any other sector. This is unacceptable. Construction workers should not face the risk of losing their lives when they leave their homes and families to earn a living.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act’s General Duty Clause mandates that employers must provide a workplace free from hazards that can cause serious harm or death. So, what went wrong in this incident? The surviving family deserves clear answers.

Unfortunately, fall accidents like this one are not uncommon. Lack of adequate fall protection is consistently one of the most common safety violations in construction. Generally, any work performed at heights of six feet or more must have guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems in place. Were these safety measures implemented at this job site?

Losing a loved one in a workplace accident brings immense emotional and mental pain, often accompanied by financial strain. When negligence is the cause of such hardships, those affected have the right to hold the responsible parties accountable.

May the deceased’s family find the answers they deserve.
