Hector Rena Dies in an Accident with a Semi-truck After Exiting Vehicle to Retrieve Items on Southeast Loop 410 in San Antonio, Texas

SAN ANTONIO, TX – A man was killed after being struck by an 18-wheeler. The incident happened Wednesday morning on Southeast Loop 410 near East Southcross.

According to reports, 62-year-old Hector Rena was driving a truck when he lost the load he was hauling. He exited his vehicle to pick up the fallen items, which included cans.

One 18-wheeler stopped to allow Rena to retrieve the trash, but another 18-wheeler swerved to avoid the stopped truck and struck him.

Rena was pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details have been released.

Thoughts on semi-truck collisions

Motorists have a responsibility to drive safely and maintain proper speed and distance. Accidents like this can be prevented when traffic rules are followed. Truck drivers, in particular, must ensure they have enough distance to react to unexpected situations ahead. When basic safety rules are ignored and someone dies as a result, the responsible party should be held accountable.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) advises commercial trucks to keep a five-second distance from the vehicle in front when driving over 40 mph. It appears the first semi-truck followed these safety guidelines but the second may not have. Why not? What went wrong? Was the second semi-truck adhering to safety protocols? The family of the deceased deserves answers.

Losing a loved one brings significant emotional and physical pain, often coupled with financial hardship. When these losses result from someone else’s negligence, those affected should have the right to hold the responsible party accountable.
