Boston Scientific Recalls Accolade Pacemakers Linked to Malfunction and Two Deaths


Boston Scientific has issued a recall for several models of its Accolade pacemakers after reports of a malfunction that can cause the devices to permanently enter safety mode, limiting their functionality and requiring early replacement.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), pacemakers affected by this issue cannot properly regulate certain patients’ heartbeats once they enter safety mode, posing serious health risks. The recall has been linked to two deaths, although the number of injuries remains unspecified.

The recall involves specific models within the Accolade family, including Proponent, Essentio, and Altrua 2 pacemakers and Visionist and Valitude cardiac resynchronization therapy devices. These devices were manufactured before September 2018, and Boston Scientific has indicated that approximately 13% of Accolade pacemakers produced before that date may be affected.

The problem stems from a manufacturing defect that causes the pacemaker’s battery to underpower the system, potentially leading to a permanent transition into safety mode. Physicians and patients are advised to create a plan for surgical replacement if a device is impacted.
