Fatal Accident with Abandoned Semi-Truck in Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – A  crash occurred early this morning in Broward County, resulting in the death of a 70-year-old man. Authorities report that the man was driving a silver 2012 Nissan Rogue when he collided with an abandoned 2005 semi-trailer. The incident took place on U.S. 27 north of Interstate 75.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle veered off the roadway and struck the rear left side of the parked semi-trailer before bouncing back into the outside lane.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Semi-truck Shoulder Parking: A Dangerous Practice That Demands Accountability

It’s easy to assume driver error in incidents like this, but such conclusions may miss other contributing factors. When a crash involves a truck parked on the shoulder of a highway, a more thorough investigation is needed. Parking a large semi-truck close to moving traffic is dangerous and should be avoided whenever possible.

The trucking industry has established safety protocols that caution against parking on busy shoulders due to the significant hazards it poses. These risks are well-recognized, and trucking companies understand the potential for serious accidents. When drivers choose to park in unsafe locations, they should not be allowed to shift blame onto others for the dangerous conditions they created.

Sadly, these types of accidents are all too common. In one recent case we handled, a young father lost his life after colliding with a semi-truck parked too close to moving traffic. The truck driver claimed the vehicle had stopped due to a flat tire, shifting responsibility onto the victim. However, our investigation revealed the tire had been underinflated for an extended period. Instead of replacing it, the trucking company repeatedly inflated it temporarily, prioritizing cost over safety. This negligent decision resulted in a tragic loss, leaving a child without a father.

In another case, a man died after his car struck a semi-truck parked on the left shoulder of a busy highway. The truck driver admitted stopping to use the restroom and parking just inches from the traffic flow. This reckless decision cost an innocent life.

When negligence or misconduct is a factor, those responsible must be held accountable. No one should have to lose a loved one due to someone else’s reckless actions.

Detailed investigations by trained professionals can reveal the facts and help ensure justice is served. Those impacted by unsafe practices deserve straightforward answers and the reassurance that these avoidable tragedies won’t happen again.
