GM Expands Recall of GMC and Chevy Trucks Over Tailgate Malfunction

General Motors has expanded its recall to include over 132,000 additional heavy-duty pickup trucks in the U.S., citing a defect that could cause tailgates to open unexpectedly while parked.

The recall now covers specific 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 models, adding to the 323,000 trucks recalled earlier this year. The issue affects vehicles equipped with a manual tailgate, power locking, and release features.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), water can seep into the electronic tailgate release switches, potentially causing a short circuit that unlatches the gate. If the tailgate opens unexpectedly, cargo could spill onto the roadway, creating a safety hazard.

The decision to expand the recall came after GM identified 237 reports of tailgates opening without warning. To address the issue, dealerships will replace the current exterior touchpad switch assemblies with upgraded versions designed to resist water intrusion.

GM advises truck owners to double-check that their tailgates are securely closed and latched before driving until the repair is completed.

The automaker plans to notify affected owners by mail beginning January 13.
