Hyundai Issues Recall for Over 226,000 Vehicles Due to Rearview Camera Safety Concern

Hyundai Motor America has announced the recall of approximately 226,118 vehicles in the United States due to potential issues with rearview cameras that may fail to display images. The affected vehicles include specific hybrid and plug-in hybrid models and non-hybrid versions.

The recall applies to 2021–2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid SUVs, Elantra Hybrid sedans, and 2022 Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrids and select non-hybrid models of the Santa Fe and Elantra. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from insufficient soldering on the circuit boards within the rearview cameras, which could cause them to malfunction.

Rearview cameras are a critical safety feature required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, which mandates rear visibility systems in all new vehicles. The failure of these cameras poses a safety risk, prompting the recall.

Hyundai will address the issue by replacing the affected rearview cameras at no cost to vehicle owners. The automaker plans to notify affected customers via mail starting January 19, 2025.

Owners with questions or concerns can contact Hyundai’s customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall number 271.
