Javier Padilla-Gutierrez Killed in a Semi-truck Accident on Kennedy Expressway in Chicago, Illinois

Chicago, Ill. — A hit-and-run incident on the Kennedy Expressway claimed the life of a construction worker on Monday night.

Illinois State Police reported that the crash occurred in the westbound lanes near Kinzie Street in Hubbard’s Cave. A semi-truck struck an aerial lift where the worker, identified as 54-year-old Javier Padilla-Gutierrez, was standing.

Padilla-Gutierrez was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver of the semi-truck fled the scene and did not stop.

The surviving family deserves justice and compensation from the trucking company for the loss of their loved one

A construction worker tragically lost their life while working to improve our roadways. Now, a grieving family must cope with the emotional pain and financial challenges that come with such an unimaginable loss—all caused by a driver who should never have been behind the wheel.

The trucking company’s records could provide crucial insights. Investigating their hiring standards, safety practices, and the driver’s history might reveal whether important precautions were overlooked. Did the driver have prior violations? Were they adequately trained in work zone safety? Data from the truck’s recorder will show its speed and braking actions, while dashcam footage may expose distractions or other contributing factors.

Often, incidents like this aren’t isolated to a single moment of negligence. They can expose systemic issues within a company—such as prioritizing profits over safety. Some trucking firms pressure drivers with tight schedules, ignore signs of fatigue or fail to enforce essential safety protocols.

For the worker who lost his life, uncovering the full story is vital. This isn’t just about one driver’s error—it’s about justice for the family by holding everyone accountable, from the driver to any company leadership that may have fostered unsafe practices.
