Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Semi-Truck Near Winn-Dixie in DeLand, Florida

Deland, Fla. — A pedestrian died early in the morning near the Winn-Dixie on South Spring Garden Avenue and West Howry Avenue.

Authorities report that the incident occurred in the loading area behind the supermarket. According to investigators, a semi-truck driver was turning into the area when the vehicle struck a man walking nearby.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Commercial trucks have a responsibility to drive safely in parking lots

Accidents like this one happen without warning, leaving families heartbroken and struggling to cope. What makes these tragedies even harder to accept is that many are entirely preventable.

Sadly, incidents like this occur far too often. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13% of all pedestrian accidents in parking lots result in fatalities. We must do more to protect pedestrians, who are especially vulnerable in these spaces.

Truck drivers have a duty to navigate parking lots with extreme care—maintaining slow speeds, checking blind spots, and staying alert to their surroundings, particularly in areas with pedestrian traffic. So when accidents happen, the question is: what went wrong?

The family left behind deserves answers. Too often, trucking companies try to shift blame or minimize their responsibility in these situations to reduce what they pay in settlements. This practice is unacceptable. Families need advocates who will hold these companies accountable and fight for fair compensation—not quick settlements designed to let them off the hook.

The aftermath of a truck accident is always challenging, but no family should face it alone. With the right support, families can focus on healing and rebuilding their lives, knowing their rights are protected. While we can’t change what happened, we can work to secure justice, honor their loss, and ensure their voices are heard.
