Man Dies in an Accident with a Parked Semi-truck on State Route 8N at Central Interchange in Akron, Ohio

Akron, OH – A motor vehicle accident claimed the life of a 40-year-old man Monday evening on State Route 8N at the Central Interchange.

Authorities report that a vehicle collided with a parked semi-truck trailer, becoming wedged against a guardrail. The impact caused extensive damage, requiring a crane to lift the trailer off the vehicle to access the driver.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

Semi-trucks should not park on the shoulder of highways

It’s easy to assume that the man killed in this crash is at fault for colliding with a parked truck. However, for the surviving family, it is important to determine why the truck was parked on the side of the road in the first place. Shouldn’t the truck driver have recognized the risks—how even a tiny error by a passing driver can result in devastating consequences? Parking on the side of the road is a well-known danger in the trucking industry, and it has caused countless tragedies just like the one here.

In one case I handled, a young man who was a husband and a father lost his life after crashing into a semi-truck parked dangerously close to traffic. The truck driver claimed he had no choice but to stop due to a flat tire. However, our investigation revealed the tire had been underinflated for an extended period. Instead of addressing the issue properly, the trucking company repeatedly inflated the tire to avoid repairs. This decision, prioritizing profits over safety, cost a man his life and left a child without a father.

In another tragic incident, a man died when his car struck a semi-truck parked on the left shoulder of a busy highway. The truck driver admitted he had stopped there simply to use the restroom, placing the truck dangerously close to passing vehicles. This thoughtless choice ended an innocent life.

When negligence or reckless actions cause these preventable tragedies, the truck driver and the trucking company must be held accountable. No one should lose a loved one because of others’ poor decisions.

Thorough investigations by experienced professionals can reveal the truth and help families achieve justice. Those affected by unsafe practices deserve answers, accountability, and assurance that steps will be taken to prevent similar heartbreak in the future.
