Construction Worker in Critical Condition After Sewer Pipe Accident in Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City, Mo. – A man is in critical condition after he was found unresponsive in a sewer pipe. The incident happened Monday morning on Old Santa Fe Road.

According to reports, a 30-year-old male worker was found in a 15-foot maintenance hole unconscious and face down with dangerously low oxygen levels, at 11%. Levels below 19.5% are considered hazardous. The cause of the low oxygen levels remains unknown, as no toxic fumes were detected.

The worker is employed by Global Earthwork + Underground, a company involved in installing new sewer systems in Kansas City.

No additional details have been released.

Thoughts on workplace accidents

Sewer maintenance and repair operations involve entering hazardous spaces. For this reason, employers are responsible for training their operators, who must enter maintenance holes on safety practices. In addition, employers must ensure workers have access to test oxygen levels and explosive gases before entry and throughout their time in a confined space, which is vital for their safety. Were all necessary safety precautions observed and implemented here?

Based on the fact that serious injuries were suffered, it seems they weren’t, and those responsible must be held accountable.

May the injured make a full and swift recovery.
