Peter Mollema Injured in a Work-related Accident at a Construction Site in Ellsworth Township, Minnesota

Meeker County, Minn. — A construction worker was seriously injured after falling into a pit and impaling his leg on a grounding rod at a work site. The incident happened Thursday evening in Ellsworth Township in the 67000 block of County Highway 18.

According to reports, 37-year-old Peter Mollema was engaged in fiber optic work when the incident occurred.

LifeLink III flew Mollema to the hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Workplace injuries are preventable when companies take the time to ensure worker safety

Although there are not enough details to determine exactly what happened, we know that most workplace accidents can be avoided with the right safety protocols, and this generally falls on the companies overseeing the job site.

Companies are responsible for ensuring those working at a job site are safe and return home each night unharmed. This duty arises from state and federal regulations and general legal principles. For instance, OSHA mandates that open pits, tanks, vats, and ditches must be secured with covers or guardrails to prevent accidents. Were these safety measures applicable here and being followed?

The injured worker deserves answers to these types of questions, and if it turns out his injuries were due to someone else’s negligence, he deserves compensation for his losses. Everyone has the right to a safe work environment, free from avoidable hazards.
