Pieter Hanekom Injured in Semi-truck Tire Accident on Highway 10 Near Hawarden, Iowa

Hawarden, Iowa — A man was hospitalized when the semi-truck he was driving experienced a tire blowout. The incident happened on Highway 10.

According to reports, 43-year-old Pieter Hanekom was driving a 2009 Peterbilt semi-tractor when a tire ruptured, causing him to lose control. The truck veered into the north ditch and came to rest on its side.

Hanekom was transported to the hospital.

No further details have been released.

Trained tire defect lawyers need to inspect the tire to determine if it is defective.

Unexpected tire blowouts are extremely dangerous for truckers and the motoring public. What’s particularly worrying is that many of these tire failures are due to factors beyond the control of the trucker or the trucking company. They are caused by defective tires when they leave the manufacturer, something that no one has control over but the company that produces them. Tire failures caused by defects are on the rise. We are seeing them happen all across the country, leading to the same result: injured and killed truckers.

We are currently handling one such accident in South Carolina for a family who lost their husband and father in a semi-truck accident on I-85 near Anderson. The trucker was traveling cross-country in his 18-wheeler when his front tire failed, causing a catastrophic crash. Our investigation into the accident revealed clear signs that the tire failed because it was defective. This man lost his life because the manufacturer sold a defective tire.

We are handling another such case in Arizona for a family who crashed head-on with a semi-truck that suffered a tire failure due to a defect. After the tire failed, the truck traveled through a massive dirt median and into oncoming traffic. The trucker had little control over the truck because the tire failure was so violent. Oftentimes, the manufacturer in this type of crash tries to blame the trucker for not properly controlling the vehicle. However, anyone who has seen a sudden steer axle tire failure knows how violent and dangerous they are.

Defective tires making it onto our roadways is unacceptable, and tire manufacturers must be held accountable for these incidents.

While I can’t confirm if the tire in this crash was defective based on the current information, the incident resembles other cases involving defective steer axle tires. The tire needs to be inspected by trained professionals. If it is found to be faulty, the injured here should have every legal right to hold the manufacturer responsible for the injuries suffered in this crash.

May all the facts of what happened come to light soon.
