Ricardo Betancourt and Mitchell Reinitz were Seriously Injured in a Tire Blowout and Semi-truck Accident on US 281 at County Road 129 in Alice, Texas

Alice, Tex. – Two people were injured, and one person is in critical condition after a tractor-trailer suffered a tire blowout. The incident happened Monday morning on US-281 at County Road 129.

According to reports, a southbound tractor-trailer experienced a tire blowout, causing it to tip over and spill its cargo across the highway, blocking the southbound lane. The driver, Ricardo Betancourt, was injured in the crash.

Mitchell Reinitz stopped his vehicle to assist Betancourt when a second tractor-trailer collided with the overturned trailer, injuring Reinitz and the second truck’s driver.

Betancourt and the second truck driver were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Reinitz was transferred to a hospital in Corpus Christi, where he remains in critical condition.

The cause of the blowout needs to be determined

When a commercial truck’s tire suddenly bursts, it might seem like bad luck or an unfortunate accident. However, many truck accidents across the country are not just random events—defective tires often cause them. These tires should never have left the production line and onto our roadways. These tires are ticking time bombs that put the lives of innocent truckers at risk every single day.

Particularly alarming is the fact that many of these tire failures stem from factors beyond the control of the trucker or the trucking company. We are currently representing a family who lost their husband in a tragic accident on I-85 near Anderson, South Carolina that sounds just like this one.

Our client was driving his 18-wheeler across the country when his tire unexpectedly failed, causing his truck to crash in a similar manner. Upon investigating the incident for the surviving wife, we discovered clear defects in the tire that were the cause of the tire failing.

Tire defect accidents can be complicated. Tire manufacturers often try to avoid responsibility by blaming the truck driver and the trucking company for not controlling the truck or adequately maintaining the tires. This is unfair. When a tire fails because it is faulty, the manufacturer is the only one at fault.

Although one cannot determine if this tire was defective based on the available information, this crash resembles others involving defective truck tires. If the tire is found to be defective, the injured and their family should have every legal right to hold the manufacturer responsible for the devastating harm they are experiencing due to their injuries.

Additionally, the second truck’s actions need to be investigated to determine why it could not avoid colliding with the two other vehicles.

May all those injured recover soon.
