Wayne Cook Dies in an Accident with a Semi-truck that Failed to Stop at a Stop Sign at the Intersection of Highway 6 and 25 in Hitchcock, Nebraska

Hitchcock County, Neb. — A man lost his life when a semi-truck failed to stop at a stop sign, colliding with their vehicle. The incident happened Thursday morning around 6:55 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 6 and 25.

According to reports, a semi-truck and trailer were traveling north on Highway 25, north of Trenton. The semi failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection, colliding with another semi-truck and trailer that was heading west on Highway 6.

The driver of the westbound semi, identified as 42-year-old Wayne Cook, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the northbound semi has been arrested and is being held in Hitchcock County Jail. He faces charges including motor vehicle homicide, tampering with physical evidence, possession of alcohol in a commercial motor vehicle, open alcohol container, and multiple commercial vehicle violations.

Thoughts on semi-truck collisions

There is no question that the truck driver is at fault for what happened. The trucking company that hired him should also be held accountable if an investigation shows that it had (or should have) knowledge of the reckless endangerment of the motoring public. What was their process for hiring drivers? Did the driver have any repeated violations that were ignored? Was there zero tolerance for truckers who failed to follow safety rules? The company surely must have known that there were multiple vehicle violations. The deceased’s family deserves answers.

I am grateful the police took swift action and arrested the at-fault driver. May full accountability be had and the surviving family receive the justice they so rightfully are owed.
