Worker Injured After Fall at Jupiter US Highway 1 Bridge in Florida

Jupiter, Fla. — A worker who fell while working at the Jupiter US Highway 1 Bridge was rescued by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue’s Special Operations and Battalion One unit. The incident happened late Monday night.

PBCFR reported setting up a rescue system using an on-site crane to extract the individual safely.

The injured worker was airlifted to a trauma center for further medical treatment.

No additional details have been released.

Thoughts on workplace accidents

While we lack all the specifics to fully understand what happened here, we know that employers can prevent most workplace accidents when they implement proper safety measures.

OSHA mandates several precautions to prevent worker falls. In general industry workplaces, fall protection must be provided at elevations of four feet. Workers on surfaces six feet or above a lower level, even if not working on leading edges, must be protected by guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems. Were these safety measures followed in this case?

The National Safety Council reports that hundreds of thousands of workers are injured in falls each year, many of whom require time off from work. Preventable accidents like this should never happen. When they do, those responsible must be held accountable.
