Alexander Conley Dies in an Accident Involving Two Semi-trucks on Interstate 5 in Fife, Washington

Pierce County, Wash. – A man is dead after a collision involving two semi-trucks. The incident happened on Interstate 5 in Fife Friday morning.

According to the Washington State Patrol, 26-year-old Alexander Conley collided with a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder. He then was struck by a semi-truck, resulting in his death.

No further details have been provided.

Why was the semi-parked on the side of the road?

So many things to consider regarding this tragic incident that took the life of a young man. For one, why was a semi-truck parked on the shoulder? Highway shoulder lanes are not parking spaces and are hazardous when used as such. Secondly, why did the second semi-truck collide with the deceased’s vehicle? Semi-trucks should allow enough distance between them and the car in front of them to avoid slamming into them in case of sudden traffic changes. Surviving family members deserve answers as to whether this accident could have been prevented.

People in the trucking industry know that this kind of accident happens often. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has even advised against trucks parking on the shoulder due to these dangers. Truck drivers who choose to park in such risky spots cannot shift the blame onto the deceased driver. They must take responsibility for their actions.

I recently worked on a case where a young husband and father crashed into the back of a semi-truck parked near a moving lane of traffic, similar to what happened here. The truck had a flat tire, and the trucker claimed he had no choice but to pull over. However, our investigation revealed that the tire had been underinflated for a long time, showing that the trucking company had repeatedly inflated the tire instead of replacing it to avoid downtime. What seemed like a reasonable decision to pull over and risk others’ safety was a deliberate choice to prioritize profits over safety. This tragic decision cost a man his life and left a child without a father. We are seeing more and more cases like this every year.

Sadly, this young man did not have much chance against two semi-trucks. Why did a semi-truck rear-end his vehicle? The (FMCSA) advises large trucks to keep at least a five-second distance between themselves and the car in front of them. Did that happen here?

There are so many unanswered questions in a complex accident like this one. The surviving family, at minimum, deserves answers.
