Brad Santiago had Leg Entangled in a Concrete Curb Machine at the Deer Hollow Subdivision in Grovetown, Georgia

Grovetown, Ga. —Brad Santiago suffered a serious accident with a concrete curb machine. The incident happened Wednesday morning at the Deer Hollow Subdivision.

According to reports, Santiago’s leg was entangled in a concrete curb machine. The machine involved uses rotating augers to pull concrete or asphalt through the machine and shape it into a curb.

First responders called in a team of emergency physicians from Wellstar MCG Health to help release Santiago’s leg from the machine. Physicians had to conduct an on-site amputation of Santiago’s lower leg to free him from the machine.

Wellstar MCG Health AirCare airlifted Santiago to a nearby hospital.

No additional updates have been released.

Was the Machine Designed to Prevent unintended injury?

Amputations are serious injuries with life-changing consequences: loss of income, physical pain and suffering, and mounting medical costs are just a few of the burdens these injured workers and their families must face. It is not fair, and if people are not provided the protection they deserve, they should not have to suffer these consequences alone. Those responsible must be held accountable and fairly compensate the injured for his loss.

It will be especially important to determine if the machine was manufactured with adequate safety guards to prevent such an accident. We have handled several injuries involving men and women whose legs or arms were caught in augers or other machinery. Most of the time, this happens because the machine did not have proper warnings and/or did not have adequate safety features. This is on the manufacturer for not taking the time to think through the dangers of the machine.

The machine and actions of all involved need to be investigated to determine exactly what happened. An amputating injury is life-changing. If wrongdoing is uncovered, those responsible must be held accountable.
