Cody Jordan Dies When Coal Mound Collapses at the Santee Cooper Winyah Generating Station in Georgetown, South Carolina

Georgetown, S.C. – Cody Jordan lost his life Thursday in an industrial accident at the Santee Cooper Winyah Generating Station.

According to reports, Jordan was operating a bulldozer on a coal mound when the ground gave way, burying both him and the bulldozer.

Authorities searched the site since Thursday night and recovered his body on Friday.

Jordan was employed by a contractor who had worked with Santee Cooper for many years.

Innocent families should not suffer the unexpected loss of a loved one

Working in a coal mound is extremely dangerous. In fact, the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration cautions workers that coal and other materials are often unstable and can act like “quicksand.” Just because some jobs are more hazardous than others does not mean that safety should be compromised. In fact, the more dangerous the work, the more safety procedures should be established to protect the workers. What safety measures were in place here?

Companies play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe working environment by taking proactive measures to prevent serious accidents. According to the OSH Act’s General Duty Clause, employers must protect their workers from hazards that could cause serious harm or death. Was this followed at the accident site? When employers fail to keep workers safe, and someone dies as a result, they should be held accountable.

The family of the deceased should not have to suffer through this alone. If wrongdoing or negligence contributed to this tragic accident, the surviving family deserves justice and compensation for their immeasurable loss.
