Jeremiah Hanson, Dana Nordquist, and Alexys Vercoe were Injured in an RV Tire Blowout Accident on Interstate 90 in Fairmont, Minnesota

Fairmont, MN – Three people were injured when the RV they were traveling in suffered a tire blowout. The incident happened Wednesday evening on Interstate 90 in Martin County.

According to authorities, a 1997 Leis RV was traveling eastbound when its rear passenger tire experienced a blowout. This caused the RV to overturn off the left side of the road and stop on its side in the westbound lane.

The driver, 27-year-old Alexys Vercoe, and two passengers, identified as Jeremiah Hanson and Dana Nordquist, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency personnel transported them to the hospital.

No further details have been provided.

Tire companies that produce defective RV tires must be held accountable

When a tire blows out, we often think it’s due to neglect or simple bad luck. However, that’s not always the truth. Sure, tire maintenance is important. However, many times, tires fail because they are not good to begin with—or, in other words, the tire is defective. When this happens, the accident is in no way the fault of the driver. Accidents and injuries caused by defective RV tires are the fault of the manufacturer that produced the defective tire.

Unfortunately, defective RV tires are much more common than most RVers recognize. As recently as 2022, Goodyear recalled nearly 170,000 RV tires due to defect risks that resulted in countless accidents, injuries, and deaths across the country. We have personally helped many other RVers across the country who suffered serious accidents due to defective tires still on our roadways.

This is a big problem. Manufacturers must produce RV tires with the highest care due to the unique driving patterns RVs engage in. Often, RVs use tires like those used on delivery trucks or other similar-sized vehicles. The difference is that a delivery truck may travel 100,000 miles in a year, whereas an RV may travel 100,000 miles over the course of twenty years. These different use cases require different considerations when producing the tire.

I am thankful to learn that no fatal injuries have been reported as of now, and I hope that all involved recover fully from their injuries. Nevertheless, the road to recovery after an accident such as this one is generally long, difficult, and expensive. If the tire that failed and caused this crash, in fact, is defective, the injured should be provided fair and just compensation from the manufacturer to cover these expenses and ease the burdens of a long, difficult recovery.
