John Allen Dies after Fall from Scaffolding at 9-story Building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — A construction worker was killed after falling nine stories from scaffolding at a construction site on Melwood Avenue. The incident happened Thursday morning.

According to reports, 47-year-old John Allen was working on the building’s exterior when he fell from the scaffolding. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An OSHA spokesperson confirmed the company involved is Cost Company, which has a history with OSHA.

Hudson Companies, the developer behind the building project, released the following statement:

“We express our deepest condolences following the tragic accident that occurred this morning. We are profoundly saddened by this loss, and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Allen as well as his employer, Cost Company. We are in communication with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as it continues its ongoing review. Safety is and remains our top priority, and we again express our sincere condolences to Mr. Allen’s family and loved ones.”

No further details have been provided.

Fall accidents should not happen in a safe work environment

This is very concerning. Under the OSH Act’s General Duty Clause, employers must maintain safe workplaces free from hazards that could result in serious injury or death to employees. Companies play an important role in fostering a safe working environment by organizing sites effectively, providing workers with suitable safety gear, and offering thorough training on safety procedures. Were these safety measures enforced at this construction site? Were suspension scaffolds adequately secured? Were workers protected from falls by guardrails, personal fall-arrest systems, or both? These measures can lower the likelihood of accidents.

There are many unanswered questions as to what caused this incident. The deceased’s surviving family deserves answers. An investigation by trained professionals can help determine whether this accident could have been prevented and if negligence or wrongdoing contributed to this man’s untimely death. If negligence or wrongdoing did play a role, those responsible should be held accountable.
