One Person Dead, Four Others Hospitalized After Toxic Gas Exposure at the Western Sugar Cooperative Plant in Fort Morgan, Colorado

Fort Morgan, Colo. — One person died, and four other people were hospitalized after exposure to toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. The incident happened at the Western Sugar Cooperative plant in northeastern Colorado.

According to reports, workers were performing routine maintenance in a utility building when they were unexpectedly exposed to naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide fumes.

Four employees and two first responders were treated at a local hospital, where one of the workers later died.

Another worker was transported to a Denver hospital and is expected to be released later this week. Two firefighters and one Western Sugar employee were treated and released.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, hydrogen sulfide, a flammable, colorless gas with a rotten egg smell, occurs naturally in fossil fuels and from the breakdown of organic matter. Taking in a few breaths of this gas can be deadly.

The injured and deceased deserve justice for harm suffered

Those impacted by this preventable incident deserve justice and compensation for the injuries and harm they have suffered. Trained lawyers with experience handling difficult plant cases are needed to ensure the companies involved take responsibility and properly compensate those injured and the families of the deceased victims.

The company will move quickly to avoid liability. It will be important for a detailed investigation to be completed as soon as possible to ensure all evidence is preserved and the injured receive the answers and justice they deserve.
