Two People Killed in an Accident Involving a Semi-truck and a Box Truck on Highway 37 Near Ft. Green Mine Road in Polk County, Florida

Polk County, Fla. –  A man and a woman died in a fiery accident involving a semi-truck and a box truck. The incident happened Wednesday morning on Highway 37 near Ft. Green Mine Road.

According to reports, a southbound box truck failed to notice traffic had slowed down and to avoid a collision, swerved into the northbound lane, directly into the path of an oncoming semi-truck.

The trucks collided, causing the semi to flip over. Both drivers, identified as a woman and a man, were killed. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

No further details have been provided.

Thoughts on fatal truck accidents

In a split second, a lapse in attention or failure to react to changing traffic conditions can lead to catastrophic consequences. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) knows this, which is why driving a box truck requires a higher standard than operating other motor vehicles on public roads. This means operators cannot be inattentive, impaired, fatigued, or disregard traffic laws.

Our thoughts are with the surviving families of both drivers during this devastating time.
