Igor Akopyan Falls to His Death in an Empty Elevator Shaft at Andy’s Equipment Exchange Warehouse in Erie, Pennsylvania

Erie, PA – A worker was killed when he fell into an empty elevator shaft at Andy’s Equipment Exchange warehouse.

According to reports, Igor Akopyan, a longtime employee of Andy’s Equipment Exchange, was waiting to board the elevator on the second floor when he opened the door and fell down the empty shaft. He fell from the second floor to the basement, succumbing instantly to multiple blunt-force traumas. The elevator was on the third floor at the time of the fall.

The warehouse, located at 959 W. 12th St., is described as a three-story brick building with a history dating back to 1922.

Thoughts on workplace fatalities

What a tragic incident. Workers in this country lose their lives about every 96 minutes from a work-related injury (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022). That’s too many of our workforce, the backbone of America, dying each day. What makes these deaths even more chilling is that, as a society, work-related injuries and death are so prevalent they have become the norm for many people, including workers. This should never be okay. Workers should not leave their homes and families each day to never return because they got killed while on the job. Employers must do more.

If safety measures were not up to date at this site, someone has a lot of questions to answer. Workers cannot continue to lose their lives in preventable accidents without accountability for those who failed to keep their workers safe.
