Juan Chavez Dies After Falling into a Trash Compactor at the UPS Facility on Monroe Drive in Dallas, Texas

Dallas, TX — A UPS vendor was killed Thursday after falling into a trash compactor at the UPS facility.

According to reports, the Dallas Fire-Rescue Urban Search and Rescue team responded to the scene to attempt to rescue Juan Chavez. At the time, it was uncertain if Chavez was still alive. However, he did not survive and died at the scene.

No further details have been released.

Thoughts on workplace accidents

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a worker dies every 96 minutes due to a work-related injury. Unfortunately, work fatalities happen so often that some people see it as just part of the job risks. We should never accept someone dying while earning a living. Workers have the right to do their jobs and return home safely to their families.

What safety precautions were in place at this UPS facility? Did all workers with access to the compactor receive the appropriate safety training? The general public and untrained employees should never be near a trash compactor room. Was the compactor equipped with a loading door? If so, the door should be interlocked with the main power switch to prevent the compactor from operating when the door is open. Did it have a loading platform with a non-slip surface? Were there appropriate safety signs? Were there proper de-energizing and lockout procedures during maintenance and repair operations? These vital questions need answers to determine whether any negligence contributed to this incident. The responsible parties should be held accountable if a thorough investigation reveals any wrongdoing or negligence.

The surviving family deserves to know what happened and justice if wrongdoing is discovered.
