Marco Portillo Jr., Killed in a Wind Turbine Accident in Wichita Falls, Texas

Wichita Falls, TX –  A man died after falling inside a wind turbine. The man has been identified as 31-year-old Marco Portillo Jr., a Weslaco resident. Portillo was involved in the “Windthorst II Wind” windmill project, operated under the supervision of EDF Renewables.

According to reports, the man was attempting to climb into the turbine when he suffered a fatal fall and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the governmental agency responsible for overseeing workplace safety conditions.

Thoughts on fatal falls at the workplace

People often want to blame the worker who died in fatal fall accidents. This is not fair. Working on wind turbines is extremely dangerous, and a lot of things can go wrong, many of them completely outside the control of the person injured or killed in the fall.

We are working on a similar incident to this one where a husband and father was repairing a wind turbine blade 150 feet in the air when the hoist he was standing on moved uncontrollably. This caused our client to fall from the safety of the basket. Although he was wearing the proper safety gear, including a harness, rope grab, safety line, etc., his lifeline malfunctioned, and he fell 150 feet to the ground below. Amazingly, he survived the fall, but his life will never be the same again.

In another similar incident we are currently working on, our client was working on a wind turbine in Eldorado, Texas, when his workmate left for the day, leaving our client in the tower alone with no lighting. With no way to see his surroundings, our client fell to his death.

In both of these incidents, the men were wholly innocent victims of others’ wrongdoing, and we are doing all we can to hold those responsible accountable.

Wind turbine fall deaths are preventable and should not happen. Why it happened here remains to be seen. However, it is clear that the surviving family deserves answers and justice for any wrongdoing that led to the death of their loved one. If the company is responsible,  it should not be allowed to escape liability.
